Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of various shoulder conditions, offering a minimally invasive approach for faster recovery and improved outcomes. This advanced surgical technique allows the surgeon to visualize and treat complex shoulder pathologies with precision, addressing issues in hard-to-reach areas of the shoulder joint that would otherwise require open surgery.

Common conditions treated with shoulder arthroscopy include rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, labral tears, shoulder instability / dislocations, frozen shoulder, arthritis, SLAP tears, paralabral cysts and ligament injuries. Since arthroscopy requires only small incisions, it results in less pain, minimal scarring, reduced complications, lesser chances of infection and a quicker return to daily activities and sports.

The Shoulder Arthroscopy Procedure

Shoulder arthroscopy is routinely performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring patient comfort. Additionally, the anesthesiologist may administer a regional nerve block to provide post-surgical pain relief, promoting a smoother recovery process. The procedure typically lasts one to two hours, depending on the severity of the shoulder injury and the extent of the damage that needs to be addressed.

During the procedure, a small camera (arthroscope) is inserted into the shoulder joint through key-hole incisions, allowing the surgeon to assess and repair damaged tendons, ligaments, cartilage, or bone. Minimally invasive instruments are then used to perform necessary repairs, such as suturing a torn rotator cuff, removing inflamed tissue, or stabilizing a dislocated shoulder.

Recovery After Shoulder Arthroscopy

The recovery period after shoulder arthroscopy varies based on the type of procedure performed. Patients are typically discharged the next day, with post-operative rehabilitation and physiotherapy playing a crucial role in restoring shoulder strength, flexibility, and mobility. A structured rehabilitation program helps ensure faster predictable recovery and long-term joint function. With proper care, most patients experience significant pain relief, improved shoulder stability, and return to an active lifestyle within a few weeks to months, making shoulder arthroscopy a preferred choice for treating shoulder injuries & pathologies.
